บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย :

The objective of this research was to compare the inorganic chemical species present in atmospheric particles by size between 0.1 and 100 [Special characters omitted.] m diameter at six different locations. Ambient particles were collected with a Wide Range Aerosol Classifier, WRAC. An Anderson Sampler and a Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor, MOUDI were used for the fine particles range (0.1-10 [Special characters omitted.] m diameter) and a Noll Rotary Impactor for the coarse particles (10-100 [Special characters omitted.] m diameter). For dry deposition flux, the samples were collected using a smooth, greased surface with a sharp leading edge. Sampling was conducted at three Maritime (Baltimore, Hart Island and Chesapeake Bay) and three Non-maritime (Chicago, South Haven and Lake Michigan) environments. The sites represented Urban, Non-urban and over water locations respectively. The samples were weighed to determine the total mass size distribution. Ion Chromatography was used to analyze cations (calcium, ammonium, magnesium, and sodium) and anions (sulfate, nitrate, and chloride). A computer program (DISTFIT) was applied to evaluate mass and chemical species size distribution. Sehmel and Hodgson deposition velocity model was applied for flux calculations. A Trimodal size distribution was measured at all six sites for total mass. The average mass median diameters for the three modes were 0.4 [Special characters omitted.] m, 4.7 [Special characters omitted.] m and 21.9 [Special characters omitted.] m. Sulfate predominated in the fine size fraction and the nitrate predominated in the coarse size fraction. Sodium and chloride were present only in Maritime locations and predominated in the coarse particles. The locations of the mass concentrations in the size distributions and stoichiometric evaluation showed that the majority of the fine particles were composed of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate. In the coarse particle size range (1-10 [Special characters omitted.] m), the size distributions, stoichiometric evaluation and chemical equilibrium constant evaluation showed that reactions between CaCO 3 and HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 to form Ca(NO 3 ) 2 and CaSO 4 were possible to proceed in the atmosphere in both Maritime and Non-maritime environments. In the Maritime environment, reactions between NaCl and HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 to form NaNO 3 and (Na) 2 SO 4 were also possible. The compounds predominated in this particle size range were calcium sulfate and calcium nitrate in both Maritime and Non-maritime locations. In Maritime locations, sodium sulfate and sodium sulfate were also measured. In the coarse particles size range (10-100 [Special characters omitted.] m), stoichiometric evaluation among the seven ions showed that cations were in excess, and the chemical composition was not clearly defined. The results indicated that the flux calculation method works well and produces results comparable to measured data for total mass but the model does not provide acceptable results for ions.
